Four more people were diagnosed with dengue fever on Hawaii's Big Island today (Nov. 5), raising the number of locally transmitted cases to 19 people, according to the Hawaii State Department of Health.
Health officials say these "locally transmitted" cases are concerning because, although dengue has popped up sporadically in Hawaii before, in most previous cases, the disease was imported, meaning travelers brought it to the islands from elsewhere. In the new cases, people are contracting dengue from the bites of local mosquitoes.
"Although dengue is not endemic to Hawaii, we do have the mosquito species capable of transmitting the disease," Dr. Sarah Park, the state epidemiologist for Hawaii, said in a statement last week. It's likely an infected traveler was bit by a mosquito and infected the local mosquito population, which led to this cluster of cases, Park said. "We want the public to be aware of this mosquito-borne disease and the steps they can take to prevent infection," she added.
The outbreak likely started in mid-September, and has infected people on all sides of the Big Island, meaning there are multiple hotspots, Park said. It's unclear who brought the illness to Hawaii, but a pending genetic analysis of the virus will tell researchers where in the world the virus originated, Park said. [Tiny & Nasty: Images of Things That Make Us Sick]
Dengue (pronounced DEN-gee) symptoms usually begin a week after a person is bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, and can include fever, joint or muscle pains, headache or pain behind the eyes, and rash, according to the Hawaii State Department of Health.
To prevent the virus' spread, health officials advised people to use mosquito nets and wear insect repellant and long-sleeved, light-colored clothing (mosquitoes are drawn to dark colors). People can also get rid of standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs, and avoid going outside in the early morning and dusk, when Aedes mosquitoes are most active.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for dengue fever, but people with the virus can receive supportive care, including taking acetaminophen, drinking fluids and resting. Infected people should avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen because these painkillers can worsen the bleeding problems that can sometimes happen in people with dengue, the department said.
This is Hawaii's third outbreak of locally transmitted dengue in the past 14 years. The largest of these struck in 2001, when 122 people contracted dengue, mostly on the island of Maui, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2011, a small outbreak sickened five people on Oahu, the state's most populated island.
Hawaii has a handful of dengue cases every year, but these cases are typically diagnosed in travelers who got the virus elsewhere, not from local Hawaii mosquitoes. This year, 13 infected travelers have been diagnosed with dengue, but these cases are separate from the current outbreak, Park said.
Will dengue become endemic in Hawaii?
Dengue fever is endemic, or permanently established in the human population, in a number of tropical places around the world, including Puerto Rico and popular tourism spots in Latin America and Southeast Asia, according to the CDC.
However, the virus is unlikely to become endemic in Hawaii, said Jonathan Day, a professor of medical entomology at the University of Florida.
Dengue is different from other mosquito-transmitted viruses that have become endemic in recent years in parts of the U.S., he said. For instance, West Nile virus is carried by birds, and mosquitoes can spread the disease from birds to people because they bite both. But dengue doesn't have such an animal "reservoir," except for monkeys in Africa and Southeast Asia, the CDC said. Therefore, the virus is unlikely to persist in the mosquito population for long, once the human outbreak ends.
Other dengue outbreaks in the United States have typically lasted a year or two. In an outbreak in Brownsville, Texas, 25 people became ill with dengue in 2005, and in Key West, Florida, 90 people got dengue from 2009 to 2011, according to the CDC. [7 Devastating Infectious Diseases]
These outbreaks usually end with the help of public education campaigns and mosquito control measures. People in these areas also typically have air conditioning in their homes, which removes the humidity mosquitoes need in order to live, Day said.
But in places like Puerto Rico, dengue is likely there to stay, he said.
"There's a constant dengue problem in Puerto Rico," Day said. "You go to downtown San Juan in Puerto Rico, and the houses are all open — they have bars on the windows, but no screens, the front doors are open [and there's] no air conditioning. Every house has a population of Aedes aegypti [mosquito] that live right inside the house."
For Hawaii, however, dry weather is in the near-term forecast, which should help abate mosquito transmission of the virus, Park said. Nonetheless, it's unclear how long the outbreak will last.
"I think the only question about Hawaii right now is, are we looking at the beginning of a large transmission event, where there might be 50 or 100 cases, or are we looking at something that has been going on during September and October, and is essentially over?" Day said. "At this point, I don't think we know the answer to that."

Over the past several years, astaxanthin has earned a reputation as one of the most potent and powerful nutritional supplements ever made. I first began spreading the word about astaxanthin in 2004 when I toured the BioAstin production farm in Hawaii and published a series of articles and interviews about it (http://www.naturalnews.com/astaxanthin.html).

Briefly stated, astaxanthin is a fat-soluble antioxidant with neuroprotective support. It has been extensively studied in clinical trials, and its manufacturer is able to make several qualified health support statements under existing FDA regulations, including*:

• May help protect the brain from abnormal neurological function.
• May help reduce the proliferation of breast cancer tumor cells.
• May help reduce inflammation in joints and tissues.
• Helps support increased muscle recovery and stamina.
• May help protect the body from cellular damage associated with highly oxidative foods.
• May help prevent UV damage to the eyes.
• May help the skin resist UV damage from excessive sunlight exposure.

Astaxanthin is used by endurance athletes, professional fighters, exercise enthusiasts and others who seek a competitive edge.

My experience with astaxanthin

I have personally used astaxanthin since 2004. It was a crucial part of my dietary supplementation during my years in hand-to-hand combat training, where even at age 38 I was out-lasting the 19-year-old kids in class. These days, I spend more time working on the ranch with a chain saw or hauling bags of feed to the chickens, and I take astaxanthin every day along with a high-quality fish oil supplement from Living Fuel (www.LivingFuel.com). Because astaxanthin is fat soluble, it works better when you take it with a fish oil supplement. The combination is extremely powerful from a nutritional science point of view.

I credit astaxanthin with protecting my brain function, helping me stay mentally sharp and also keeping my physical endurance high. It's not unusual for me to walk 4-5 miles a day, and I sometimes do that while fasting for 24 hours, as I'm into intermittent fasting. In fact, yesterday I fasted all day while I was clearing brush, removing barbed wire, chain-sawing some fallen trees, and doing other basic farm work. Most people would have considered it a day of "hard work" and couldn't imagine doing it on an empty stomach. But I did it fasting all day long, drinking only Roobios tea in the morning and taking some astaxanthin and fish oils the night before. (And yes, I am dropping a few pounds now, thanks to intermittent fasting. It really works...)

The Health Ranger's top 3 nutritional supplements

If you want to stay alive and healthy while helping prevent chronic degenerative health conditions, there are THREE powerful supplements that I consistently recommend:

#1 - Vitamin D. This is the single most important nutrient you can buy and consume. It alone can help prevent cancer, boost brain function, help prevent diabetes, prevent osteoporosis, protect heart health, protect mood and brain function, and much more. Nearly everyone is chronically deficient in vitamin D.

#2 - Astaxanthin. As described here, this is the "king of carotenoids." Simply the most powerful antioxidant known to modern science. It's what turns the flesh of salmon bright red (and is believed to help grant them their phenomenal endurance while swimming upstream).

#3 - Fish oil or marine oil (rich in omega-3s). This is crucial. A high-quality fish oil supplement boosts mood and brain function, prevents heart disease, improves skin health, and can even help lower high blood pressure by making your blood flow more easily.

If you were to take only these three supplements and nothing else, you would very likely experience a profound difference in your health. In fact, if we wanted to turn America into a nation of healthy, intelligent people with genius children and highly productive senior citizens, we would want to hand out vitamin D, astaxanthin and fish oil supplements to everybody. It could literally revolutionize the future of any nation!

Of course, other nutrients are important such as vitamin C, magnesium, zinc and so on, but it has long been my belief that these top three (vitamin D, astaxanthin, fish oil) deliver the most profound positive results that people really notice and feel.

In other words, if you have not yet tried taking these three supplements every day for 30 days, you will, I think, be amazed at the difference they make. In fact, I urge you to do so.

Recommended sources for these top three supplements

Best Vitamin D3 supplement: Solgar Vitamin D3 10,000 IU. This is a high-dose vitamin D in a softgel. It's not vegan, however. But I like the small size and the high dose of D. I usually take one of these each day unless I'm getting a lot of sunlight, in which case I may skip the supplement.

Best fish oil: LivingFuel Super Essentials Omega-3 from www.LivingFuel.com - It's a bit pricey but I trust the quality, and it naturally contains some vitamin D by itself. I also like Carlson Labs as a source for fish oils. Beware of cheap "big box store" brands of fish oils, as they are often loaded with dangerous chemicals.

Suppressing the appetite is a key way to achieve weight loss. People are less likely to eat more than they should when their appetite is low. Studies show that natural supplements with extracts from artichokes, beans and vinegar may act as hunger suppressants.

Weight loss

Supplements containing artichoke and bean extracts may together be an appetite suppressor to promote weight loss. A study published in Phytotherapy Research in February 2011 found that participants given extracts of Cynara scolymus, from artichokes, along with extracts from Phaselolus vulgaris, from beans, were less hungry and lost weight. The participants took the supplements for two months. The control groups who did not take supplements did not experience a decrease in body mass index or a susceptibility to hunger like the supplement group experienced. Body mass index is a measure of weight compared to height that estimates body fat percentage.

Insulin

A study published in Phytotherapy Research in March 2011 found similar results in rats to the February 2011 study. Researchers fed normal weight and obese rats Cynara scolymus extracts an hour before their meals. Both the normal weight and obese rats showed a significant reduction in post-prandial glycemia, which is the level of glucose in blood before a meal. This is significant because your body releases insulin when glucose levels rise. Insulin stimulates glucose use for energy, but it also stores unused glucose as fat.

Satiation

According to a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2005, vinegar supplements increase satiety and decrease the postprandial insulin response. Study participants were split into groups and given different levels of vinegar along with white bread. The higher the amounts of supplements the greater the feelings of fullness and the lower the insulin and glucose responses. Lower amounts of vinegar still decreased the responses significantly at 15 and 30 minutes; however, only the larger amount group saw a significant reduction when levels at 90 minutes post-meal.

Side effects

Supplements can help people avoid certain side effects. Drinking apple cider vinegar may work as a hunger suppressant, but it may can cause throat irritation when someone drinks it frequently because it is highly acidic, according to registered dietitian Katherine Zeratsky of the Mayo Clinic. A supplement cannot irritate the throat.

A natural appetite suppressant along with a healthy diet and reasonable exercise promotes faster weight loss and increases adherence to better eating.

At least half of Americans over the age of 50 are at risk of developing osteoporosis, according to the Surgeon General of the United States. Ten million people already have the disease, and another 34 million are at risk, notes the same report. Calcium and other minerals and vitamins are important to bone health; however, not all forms of calcium areequal.

Bone loss begins around the age of 35 and continues throughout life. Osteoporosis occurs because of an inadequate amount of calcium intake or poor absorption. The body seeks the most accessible source for this important mineral and leeches calcium from your bones, causing the disease. Because calcium and other minerals are critical to healthy bone maintenance, it's important to diagnose the problem early and correct it through changes in diet and calcium supplementation. The question is, which calcium supplement provides the best protection and at what dosage?

Calcium hydroxyapatite

Although many foods supply various calcium salts, human and animal bones are the only natural source of calcium hydroxyapatite. According to The Weston A. Price Foundation, the most efficacious calcium hydroxyapatite is microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate -- also called MCHC -- which is extracted from the raw bones of free-range cattle from New Zealand. These cows are raised with no exposure to antibiotics, pesticides, hormones or other toxic chemicals. To maintain its full spectrum of nutrients and minerals, the bone extract needs to be processed at very low temperatures. This kind of calcium is significantly more usable by the body and much easier to absorb.

Magnesium and boron

Most calcium supplements, including MCHC, have various amounts of magnesium and boron added, which increase absorption. Magnesium is needed to produce energy, cellular replication, and to help form proteins in the body. It reduces blood pressure, enhances heart function, lessens cramping in muscles, and supports the regulation of calcium metabolism. Certain types of magnesium are more easily absorbed such as magnesium aspartate, magnesium glycinate, and magnesium oxide. Look for these in supplements combined with MCHC.

Boron is needed for the development of healthy bones and joints. It works with magnesium to regulate calcium absorption and metabolism by regulating the body's steroid hormones, such as cortisol and vitamin D. Both minerals are necessary for proper calcium metabolism and a strong skeleton.

Calcium absorption and food

A mere 30 percentof calcium consumed in our food is actually absorbed, according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT). Calcium absorption is inhibited by various factors including the type of calcium consumed, as well as the presence of aluminum, which enters your body through aluminum-clad cookware, antiperspirants, antacids, foil and possibly from chem trails crisscrossing the sky.

Many of the best sources of calcium originate in our foods, not from supplements. Soups and broths made from bone are best because they provide MCHC; followed by whole raw milk, raw milk products, sea vegetables such as kelp, Celtic sea salt, brewer's yeast, green leafy vegetables and molasses.

Supplements

Most calcium supplements should be taken with food for maximum absorption. MIT notes that taking several doses in smaller amounts throughout the day helps ensure absorption. The Weston A. Price Foundation suggests consuming 500 milligrams of MCHC at a time each day and doubling or tripling that amount if you don't have access to raw milk. Look for a supplement that includes boron and magnesium to obtain the correct mineral balance for the most optimal results. Additionally, taking a vitamin D supplement daily helps to round out the beneficial effects of calcium for bone health. Millions of people lie in bed at night, their minds churning on the events of the day. They brood over the past. They plan the future. Lying there, the last thing they are capable of is restful, rejuvenating sleep.

Common sleep remedies and supplements feel weak compared to the inner commotion that rocks them every night. Prescription sleep aids may work temporarily, but are addictive, not to mention the side effects. Are there secrets to choosing natural remedies for insomnia?

Find a reliable source

"You have to go to a source that is reliable, that tests these substances, that knows what they are doing," says Reginald Cherry, MD, an integrative medical doctor. "Harvesting and processing herbs is a science unto itself. You can't just start pouring stuff into capsules and selling it. You have to do lab testing, screen for toxins, and you have to know how and when to harvest the herbs for maximum potency. Otherwise, you get a supplement that looks like a quality supplement. It may have a pretty label, but it will be ineffective at best and toxic at worst."

"A high-end supplement that works is a family of complexes," Dr. Cherry continued. "That is really a key. We try to tell people that if you are taking a vitamin and it is not getting absorbed properly, you might as well throw it out. It isn't going to do anything at all. A good supplement will have an absorption complex in it. There are a few out there that do that. They do that because they know that as people get older they produce less hydrochloric acid in their stomach and their absorption ability is less. So, they put certain ingredients in the supplements to help people absorb these nutrients and antioxidants better."

How long to quality sleep supplements take to produce results?

"We recommend that people give it three months," said Dr. Cherry. "Usually it takes a lot less than that. People usually see results in six weeks."

For impatient seekers of sleep, this seems like a tall order. Living with insomnia is no easy task. However, doing nothing about insomnia is not wise and taking pharmaceuticals is risky at best. The key here is, don't stop taking high quality supplements before they have a chance to work! In six to 12 weeks, even those with severe insomnia can be consistently sleeping like a baby with a highly potent, all-natural supplement taken an hour or so before bedtime every night. Impatience is perhaps the biggest downfall of any seeker of alternative remedies.

Is it the L-theanine?

Readers should research L-theanine combined with melatonin. The combination of those two ingredients are known to encourage sleep, quiet the mind, and bring on sufficient relaxation to invite sleep.

A study published in the March 2012 issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Association of Pediatrics, has shown again how important vitamin D3 supplementation is during pregnancy. This study measured the vitamin D level of pregnant women and then observed language development in their children at different ages (2, 5, 8, 10, 14, and 17 years of age).

The study found that women who had a vitamin D level less than 46 nmol/L during pregnancy were at least twice as likely to have children with language difficulties at ages 5 and 10 years compared to women with a vitamin D level of 70 nmol/L or higher.

This finding is especially interesting because most labs place the normal limit of serum 25(OH)-vitamin D in the 30 range, rather than the 70 range. Many vitamin D experts have said that a range of 60 to 100 is ideal, and this study suggests that at least during pregnancy these higher levels of vitamin D are ideal. In order to achieve these levels pregnant women need to take a significantly higher level of vitamin D3 than is found in most prenatal or calcium supplements. A supplement in the range of 5,000 to 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily is usually required to raise serum vitamin D levels to these levels.

Vitamin D taken during pregnancy has shown other benefits for later childhood as well. Several studies have shown that higher vitamin D levels during pregnancy are associated with less respiratory problems during childhood. A study published in January 2011 in Pediatrics showed that newborns with a higher cord blood level of vitamin D had less respiratory infections during infancy and less asthma during early childhood. Four previous studies showed that vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy was associated with less asthma during childhood as well.

Pregnant women should take a high quality prenatal vitamin/mineral supplement that contains folate. In addition during pregnancy it is important to take vitamin D, an omega-3 fatty acid supplement with DHA, and probiotics, all of which have proven to have positive health benefits for babies.

The Adya Clarity product we exposed last year as being fraudulently marketed as a miracle health supplement has been renamed and is currently being sold across America by over a dozen distributors. (Those distributor names and numbers are listed below).

The product is now being offered under names such as "ionic minerals" "black mica extract" and "magnetic minerals." As NaturalNews established in previous reports:

• Adya Clarity has been imported as "battery acid" (http://www.naturalnews.com/034005_Adya_Clari...)

• It is mined from ore (rocks and metals) near Fukushima, Japan

• The second-highest metal content in Adya is aluminum, which was omitted from the original label.

• The product consists of metals (iron, aluminum, etc.) dissolved with sulfuric acid into a liquid form.

• It has been heavily marketed as a dietary supplement for internal consumption, along with completely unsubstantiated health claims.

• People who drink the product report symptoms such as black stuff coming out of their ears, and fingernails turning black.

• The fraudulent marketing of the product included claims that Adya Clarity could remove "suckerfish snakes" from a woman's bowels, or that it was removing metals from one man's brain because he had black stuff coming out of his ears (among other ridiculous claims).

The Health Canada fraud

Adya, Inc. has claimed its product is "approved" by Health Canada and is therefore "harmonized" for the United States. This is blatantly fraudulent. I actually spoke to Health Canada three times on this issue. In one call, a Health Canada representative asked me if I knew of any Adya Clarity distributors in Canada. They were conducting an investigation into the off-label (unapproved) marketing of Adya Clarity, which was only registered with Health Canada as an "iron supplement."

But Canadian distribution for Adya has been shut down, providing a convenient situation where Health Canada cannot revoke their NPN number because they are not actively selling the product in Canada. Instead, Matt Bakos, the founder of Adya, claims his product's Health Canada registration number confers product approval status in the United States -- another complete fabrication.

So as long as Adya, Inc. does not actually sell their product in Canada, they can deceptively maintain their Health Canada registration number indefinitely and use that number to misrepresent their product in the United States by claiming it is "approved in Canada." This fools many consumers who don't seem to realize that Health Canada was already attempting to investigate the fraudulent marketing of Adya but halted their investigation when Adya pulled out of Canadian distribution.

I have already covered more details of Adya's Health Canada deception at:
http://www.naturalnews.com/034022_Adya_Clari...

As of today, Adya Inc. lists no Canadian distributors on its website, but it continues to point to Health Canada registration in order to falsely imply some sort of product safety and approval status in the United States. This is, all by itself, misrepresentation and fraud. As Matt Bakos says in the video we've posted (see link below): "Believe it or not, our product is harmonized by the FDA to come into the United States."

The human body requires a broad range of nutrients, both essential and nonessential, to maintain balance and good health. Essential nutrients are the ones the body cannot make for itself (or are produced in limited amounts) and must therefore be consumed through diet. The human body also requires many minerals, which are present in every cell of the body, to function properly.

Of course, getting our nutrients and minerals from the food we eat is the best scenario. Since that is not possible for most people due to the pace of our world and how our food supply is governed, most of us need a multi-mineral and multivitamin to bridge the nutrient gap.

For a list of what foods have the vitamins and minerals your child needs, visit http://www.vitaminsandminerals.net

According to the USDA half of youngsters don't get enough calcium, two-thirds are low on E and zinc, and one-third don't have enough iron. Kids low on calcium and D may have weak bones that are more prone to break. Children with even mild anemia from low iron levels can have learning and behavior problems. And, since children are often picky eaters and exposed to extra germs, all while growing, they greatly benefit from vitamins and minerals.

What to look for in children's vitamins

The next best thing to getting your nutrients from good food, is to get a food-based vitamin. These vitamins are recognizable to the human body on a molecular level, unlike synthetic (manmade) vitamins. This means that vitamins from a health food store are up to 70% more bioavailable than the vitamins you see advertised on t.v., or at chain stores. Supplements from a chain store may be less expensive, but you get what you pay for. For example, a calcium supplement from a chain store may be less expensive but what you may not realize is that it has not been molecularly distilled to remove mercury, while the one from the health food store has. It's worth a few more dollars.

What to avoid in a vitamin

Read the ingredient list. You'll be surprised how many vitamins have some form of sugar as one of the first ingredients. Avoid synthetic ingredients - they are difficult to digest and not as safe as supplements made from whole foods. Lastly, avoid the gummy. Not to be a downer, but we are doing our children a disservice to teach them that things like food and vitamins should be entertaining. They are also bad for teeth.

What kinds of supplements to get for your child

A good rule of thumb for both kids and adults is:

• multivitamin/multi-mineral
• essential fatty acids (EFAs)
• calcium/magnesium/vitamin D supplement
• probiotics
• antioxidants

All as needed, depending on diet and state of health.

Most NaturalNews readers know some of the health values of vitamin D3, which go well beyond the accepted bone health quality. But how much is enough and how little is not enough is a controversial subject. Adding to the confusion is some concern of how much would lead to excessive vitamin D3 intake to produce the rare event of vitamin D toxicity.

Vitamin D3 toxicity from skin exposure to sunlight or UVB (ultraviolet B) tanning beds is normally impossible. The process of epidermal cholesterol converting the UVB rays into the vitamin D3 precursor, cholicalciferol has the built in feature of slowing or stopping that process if too much vitamin D3 starts accumulating in your blood.

That cholicalciferol is converted in a two stage process by first the liver then the kidneys to create the active vitamin D3 hormone calcitriol.

Even large doses of vitamin D3 supplements have rarely caused a toxic reaction. But because vitamin D3 supplements are fat soluble, the toxic effects can linger longer than other toxic events. However, only three cases of vitamin D toxicity have been recorded, and they were supplementing over 40,000 IUs (international units) daily.

Most doctors and nutritional experts recommend having 25(OH)D testing done to determine your vitamin D3 blood levels while supplementing 1000 to 5000 IUs of vitamin D3 supplements daily.

Vitamin D3 supplements contain cholicalciferol, taken from the lanolin of sheep's wool after shearing. The cholicalciferol that is normally produced by the interaction of UVB sun rays with a form of cholesterol in our skin is encapsulated in those supplements.

The convenience of supplements bypasses our body's automatic safeguard feature that limits the conversion of UVB rays forming cholicalciferol, which our livers and kidneys then use to manufacture vitamin D3. Regardless, toxicity is very rare.

Recent study sets a positive health vitamin D3 threshold lower than most savvy experts

A Washington University study recorded May 1st, 2012 in the Annals of Internal Medicine by Dr. Ian de Boer, resulted in a minimum D3 blood level vitamin that merely duplicates mainstream medicine's recommendation.

Dr. de Boer's research team used 25(OH)D test data on stored blood samples from older adults who had enrolled in a nationwide cardiovascular health study from 1992 to 2006. They did a statistical follow up on major medical events these older adults had incurred and compared them to the D3 blood counts.

Their study on 1,621 senior citizens concluded that 20 ng/ml (nano-grams/milliliter) in blood serum is the cutoff point. In other words, below 20 ng/ml in blood serum invites seriously worsening health.

This is exactly what mainstream medicine considers as the minimum vitamin D3 level to ward off major disease. As we age, the process of converting sunlight to D3 wanes, and there are many who disagree with the study's recommendation.

A sneaky, eleventh-hour attempt by Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) to essentially shut down the supplement industry alongside an amendment pertaining to prescription drug user fees has failed. In a vote of 77-20, the U.S. Senate voted to table Amendment No. 2127, which would have created "duplicative, unnecessary, and unexpected new regulations" for the supplement industry that could have resulted in many common supplements being pulled from store shelves.

To the surprise of the entire natural health community, the unveiling of Amdt. No 2127 came late Tuesday afternoon, according to the Natural Products Insider (NPI), just one day before the bill to which it was attached, S. 3187, the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act, was set for a vote. But because the natural health community immediately sprung into action to oppose Amdt. No 2127, it was successfully defeated.

"(Amdt. No 2127 is) based on the misguided presumption that the current regulatory framework for dietary supplements is flawed and that the FDA lacks authority to regulate these products," said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Ut.) on the Senate Floor, in opposition to the amendment. He added that the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) already provisions the FDA with the tools it needs to properly regulate supplements, and that Amdt. No 2127 only "serves to punish all responsible companies with its overreaching mandates."

Amdt. No 2127 would have unnecessarily required all manufacturers of dietary supplements to register them with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within 30 days, even though Title III of the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 already requires registration. This 30-day requirement, in other words, was designed to be impossible for supplement companies to comply with, which would have resulted in many of them simply being pulled from the market.

According to the U.S. Senate's Legislation & Records voting page (http://www.senate.gov), the 20 U.S. Senators that voted against tabling this heinous attack on the supplement industry were:

Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ar.)
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Ca.)
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca.)
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Il.)
Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-Md.)
Sen. Al Franken (D-Mn.)

Since then, astaxanthin has become increasingly famous, being promoted by other natural health websites and, more recently, a national infomercial campaign run by another company.

The Health Ranger's personal experience with astaxanthin

During the course of several decades, medical professionals have extolled the virtues of taking enough calcium to support bone health and avoid osteoporosis. For many aging adults (especially women) this meant supplementing with one of a number of unnatural forms of the mineral, as our diet typically provides scant amounts in a desirable form from vegetarian food sources. In the past, misguided hype from the American Dairy Association has suggested that higher calcium intake is associated with a lowered risk of high blood pressure, obesity and type II diabetes, all of which are risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

Researchers from Germany are now sounding the alarm to warn unsuspecting individuals that calcium from supplements should be 'taken with caution', as they have found boosting overall calcium intake from supplementation and certain dietary sources confers no significant advantage in terms of staving off heart disease and stroke. Publishing in the British Medical Journal, scientists determined that calcium supplements might double the risk of having a heart attack.

The authors examined a cohort of 24,000 people, aged between 35 and 64 when they joined the study in 1994 to 1998. The participants were questioned about their diet for the past twelve months and they were then quizzed about whether they regularly took vitamin or mineral supplements. Their health was tracked for an average of eleven years, during which time 354 heart attacks, 260 strokes, and 267 associated deaths occurred.

Excess calcium from cheap supplements or diet can be deadly; protect yourself with vitamin K2

After accounting for confounding factors that may influence the results of the study, the research team found there was a distinct dividing line between health propagation and detriment based on calcium intake. They determined that those whose diet included a moderate amount (820 mg daily) of calcium from all sources, including supplements, had a 31% lower risk of having a heart attack than those in the bottom 25% of calcium intake. Conversely, supplementation above 1100 mg daily did not carry a significantly lower risk.

When the team looked at the source of calcium, they found that those who took calcium supplements regularly were 86% more likely to have a heart attack than those who didn't use any supplements. The researchers concluded their study "suggests that increasing calcium intake from diet might not confer significant cardiovascular benefits, while calcium supplements, which might raise heart attack risk, should be taken with caution."

The study did not factor the critical research published in the Journal of Nutrition that demonstrates how vitamin K2 is essential to usher calcium from the blood, where it can become bound with oxidized LDL cholesterol to form deadly coronary plaque. This is most likely the reason that high intakes of calcium (from diet or supplements) dramatically increased heart attack risk. To significantly lower heart disease risk, be sure to obtain calcium from vegetable sources such as leafy greens, broccoli, kale and almonds and always supplement with vitamin K2 (500 to 1000 mcg per day). Be wary of the common wisdom to take calcium as a low quality supplement to avoid a little known risk factor for heart attack.

How does the Media lie? How do the major networks mislead you into buying things you normally wouldn't buy, or NOT buying things you would regularly buy? How does the media convince you so well, to change your mind and spend money supporting the wrong causes, the wrong "cures," and worst of all, the wrong food and medicine?

Let it be told that the media in the United States has been suppressing natural cures, vitamins, herbs, and supplements for over 75 years, knowing there's hardly any money to be made from healthy people, especially compared to diseased ones. Most people know that television and radio talk shows are full of crap when it comes to nutritional advice, or do they? The media monopolies are quickly becoming experts at deception, and finding helpful information via the networks, CNN, and talk shows is impossible; it's just a labyrinth of misinformation and "close-by-choice" sales tactics, where the only options presented are all bad ones, and you're supposed to still make a decision where and HOW to spend your hard earned dollars.

ABC lies about supplements

October 10, 2011: ABC covers supplements: Just 8 months ago, ABC presented the findings of a "collection of research" showing that people who take dietary supplements are getting "few health benefits in return." The study's lead author, Jaakko Mursu, pronounced the overall message, which is a bold faced lie: Here's her overall message to the millions watching ABC and putting their faith in major network's presentations and "informative" shows that influence mass consumption in America: Mursu said, "I would conclude that supplements are not protective against chronic diseases," and "In some cases they may be harmful, especially if used for a long time."

She went on to claim that, "News about the benefits and risks of dietary supplements seems to change by the week." Maybe that's because it's hard to track all the lies the media spits out. The shows main goal was to crush the reality that antioxidants like beta carotene and vitamin E are major players in maintaining optimum health.

Then, Dr. Donald Hensrud, chair of preventive medicine at the Mayo Clinic stuck histwo cents in and said, "The conflicting evidence seems overwhelming, but the new study helps to clarify the overall message." Notice how this "chairman and doctor" makes sure you're thinking that the overall message is right to begin with. This is the ABC network convincing you that supplements are dangerous. They conveniently slide in that "Mayo Clinic" opinion, which seems so objective and reassuring. Remember, lies are best perpetuated when the consumer is given two or three choices, neither of which is beneficial or based on truth, and then left to decide within the parameter of a SET OF LIES which road he or she will follow.

CBS lies about supplements

February 11th, 2009, CBS covers supplements: This network's atrocity to humankind informs the masses that beta-carotene raises the risk of heart disease and cancer. They go on to "inform" the loyal fans that Vitamin C causes kidney stones and does not help prevent disease or the common cold. Finally, they add that Vitamin A causes liver damage, blindness and bone fractures. But only in very high doses can this occur, and just about every legitimate supplement warns you, so the story is completely misleading and full of fear tactics to get consumers to avoid supplements all together. Plus the headlines/titles of these shows warn the masses about the "danger of supplements" in general, and barely cover that it's only specific cases that create any kind of health implications.

The Early Show's Dr. Mallika Marshall misdirects the masses in a very slick way: She says, "It's also generally recommended that women who are pre-menopausal, that is, entering the change of life
...take at least 1,200 mg of calcium to help prevent bone loss and osteoporosis." But with the wrong calcium supplements, and especially with a massive dairy and meat diet, Americans are asking for kidney stones, gall stones, and brittle bones. The advice is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you need to know and it's delivered wearing a clever mask, by your trusted network and the talk shows that "play doctor."

Then she tries to trick you into believing you can only get vitamin B12 from meat: "Also, it's not a bad idea for vegetarians, especially vegans, to take a daily multivitamin, since they could be deficient in certain vitamins, such as B-12, found primarily in meats."

Unfortunately, most consumers are NOT well enough informed to understand that a few or occasional lapses in quality assurance can translate into nutrient deficiency and disease, including consumption of eggs, milk, meat, sugar and table salt. Jumping into the supplementing arena late in the game, after cancer, heart disease, diabetes or Alzheimer's has set in and expecting miracle results is not the wise approach.

When most people think about consuming beneficial bacteria, probiotic supplements and dairy products with added bacteria usually come to mind. These products provide some of the microorganisms needed for good health.

Hunter-gatherers and people living in non-westernized settings have usually been very healthy, and they don't have access to a jar of probiotic pills in the morning. Food, water, dirt/soil, human contact and other environmental factors provide these people with an abundance of probiotics. Today we have lost a lot of these benefits because everything around us is cleaned, processed and sterilized.

Trying to recreate "primitive" settings with organic and raw produce, fermentation, quality drinking water etc. will be the best bet in ensuring healthy gut flora. Probiotic supplements can also provide additional health benefits, but the quality differences are huge.

Unlike many other supplements, the health benefits of probiotics are well studied, and they are safe even in very high doses. Some supplements contain a combination of pro and prebiotics, but prebiotics can also be included on their own from foods or supplements.

Probiotic supplements account for billions in sales each year, and global sales are predicted to grow substantially over the coming years. Manufacturers and sellers are drawn to the market, but not everyone delivers quality products.

Besides avoiding supplements containing GMO's, artificial ingredients, etc., there are several aspects consumers have to consider before buying a probiotic supplement.

Important considerations

A well-know and trusted brand

Choose a probiotic supplement from a trustworthy manufacturer which provides research and thorough information about the product.

Billions of live bacteria at the time of expiration
15 billion and upwards of live probiotics in each capsule is a good recommendation. Look for a supplement that displays potency at time of expiration. A lot of the ingested microorganisms won't survive through the gastrointestinal tract, and more bacteria usually means better survival rates.

Several different bacterial strains
Different strains of bacteria have different survival rates and health benefits. Choosing a supplement with strains from different groups of probiotic bacteria will be the best bet in ensuring optimal results.

Well-researched strains
The health benefits of certain microorganisms have been well documented through research and clinical trials. Each manufacturer should be able to provide proof that their probiotic supplement contain well-researched and health promoting strains of bacteria.

Acid and bile resistant
The stomach acid and bile will kill a lot of microorganisms. Selecting a probiotic supplement with acid and bile resistant strains will ensure optimal survival.
Some probiotic supplements have enteric coating or other delivery systems that are supposed to ensure survival. Using these types of delivery systems raises some concerns:
- Their effectiveness varies and few manufacturers provide proof that their coating ensures survival
- If these microorganisms aren't supposed to survive through the GI tract, is it wise to artificially ensure their survival?
- Some enteric coatings use synthetic ingredients
- Beneficial microorganisms from natural sources don't have any enteric coating.

The latest attack on free speech in America comes from the FDA and is supported by Google Adwords. NaturalNews has learned that the FDA is quietly, and without notice to affected companies, commanding Google to disable the full Adwords accounts of nutritional supplement companies offering "detox" or "chelation" nutritional products.

This secret war against nutritional supplement companies is being waged entirely outside the law, as the FDA gives no notice to affected companies and does not give them any opportunity to respond in their defense. No judge, no jury, no notice, no due process. The FDA simply bypasses legal notice requirements and goes straight to Google, which complies by disabling Adwords accounts, shutting off an important source of revenue for nutritional supplement companies.

An economic embargo ordered by the FDA and obeyed by Google Adwords

This action is just the latest round in the FDA's war on nutritional supplement companies, which have been subjected to armed raids, threatening warning letters, product seizures, and even international kidnapping by the FDA itself (http://www.naturalnews.com/027750_Greg_Caton...).

In this case, the FDA is conducting an economic embargo on the company known as Global Healing Center (www.GlobalHealingCenter.com), founded by Ed Group III. Dr. Group is not a medical doctor, but he is a globally-recognized formulator of nutritional detoxification products that really work to help eliminate heavy metals from the body.

Ed Group's company has been a long-time advertiser with Google Adwords, using the service to not only bring Google hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in revenue, but more importantly to help reach people with high-quality nutritional products that are revered throughout the industry for their safety, potency and efficacy.

None of this seemed to matter to Google Adwords, which shuttered his entire account without notice, then claimed the FDA told them to do so (see below).

"On June 29th we noticed our sales had dropped off about 25-30% over the previous week," Dr. Group told NaturalNews. "After some research we found it was due to Google blocking our AdWords account from advertising. We tried contacting Google to see why our account had been blocked, but it wasn't until July 27th (almost a month later) that we received the answer below."

He goes on to explain:

The FDA contacted Google and demanded Google shut down our ads containing our heavy metal cleansing keywords. Google then shut down our ENTIRE account including all other non-chemical and heavy cleansing related ads resulting in a loss of approximately $70,000 in sales over a period of 3-4 weeks. The FDA did not contact us directly nor did Google contact us to let us know before shutting down our account. It seems as if the FDA has started a gestapo campaign to attack supplement companies indirectly through Google advertising.

[This was] an intentional campaign by the FDA to take money from our pockets because we never even had a product on our site which mentions chelation and the FDA has never contacted us or issued a warning to us as they are required to do by law. The FDA inspects our facility one to two times each year and have never mentioned any concern to us.

Despite downright silly and inaccurate headlines just a few weeks ago proclaiming that fish oil supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids are a waste of money, now comes research that reveals the opposite. Taking enough of these supplements appears to have enormous health benefits -- including dramatic anti-aging effects.

Last month, Natural News told readers the truth about a much ballyhooed previous study which, according to the inaccurate reporting by mainstream media, meant taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements (almost always in the form of fish oil) was a waste of money and did nothing to protect health (http://www.naturalnews.com). In fact, the study was not the last word about fish oil supplements at all and even the researchers who conducted it didn't make that claim.

It was a meta-analysis of studies involving close to 70,000 people all lumped together and included research subjects who had only taken omega-3 supplements for a short while. Some took very little. Even the authors of the study noted that "...an individual patient data meta-analysis would be more appropriate to refine possible associations related to, among others, dose, adherence, baseline intake, and cardiovascular disease risk group." But that didn't stop the media from ignoring that important point and proclaiming, as ABC News did, that omega-3s are "not a lifesaver" and do nothing for health in general.

Now, a new study by Ohio State University researchers (just published online in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity) found that overweight but healthy middle-aged and older adults who took a substantial amount (either 2.5 grams or 1.25 grams) of omega-3 supplements regularly for four months altered a ratio of their fatty acid consumption in a way that boosted preservation of tiny DNA segments in their white blood cells.

What does this mean specifically? These miniscule DNA bits are known as telomeres. They shorten over time in many types of cells as a consequence of aging. Stopping this shortening of telomeres has long been thought to be a key to halting the aging process or at least slowing it down.

The Ohio State scientists found that lengthening of telomeres in immune system cells was more prevalent in people who substantially improved the ratio of omega-3s to other fatty acids in their diet. What's more, the substantial and regular supplementation also reduced oxidative stress, known to be caused by excessive free radicals in the blood, by about 15 percent compared to the oxidative stress measured in a control group of research subjects who received placebos instead of real supplements.

"The telomere finding is provocative in that it suggests the possibility that a nutritional supplement might actually make a difference in aging," said Jan Kiecolt-Glaser, professor of psychiatry and psychology at Ohio State University and lead author of the study, in a media statement.

In yet another finding from this study, Kiecolt-Glaser's research team reported that omega-3 fatty acid supplements lowered inflammation in this same group of adults. This blows the assertion that fish oil has no heart benefits out of the water.

"Inflammation in particular is at the heart of so many health problems. Anything that reduces inflammation has a lot of potentially good spinoffs among older adults," Kiecolt-Glaser said. She added that people who are less healthy -- especially those who are under chronic stress -- may gain even more benefits from omega-3 supplementation.

The scientists also found that decreases in an inflammatory marker in the blood called interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the people taking omega-3 supplements were associated with telomere lengthening. In their earlier paper on omega-3s and inflammation, the same researchers had already reported that omega-3 supplements lowered IL-6 by 10 to 12 percent, depending on the dose. By comparison, those taking a placebo saw an overall 36 percent increase in inflammation-linked IL-6 by the end of the study.

"This finding strongly suggests that inflammation is what's driving the changes in the telomeres," Kiecolt-Glaser said.

The researchers concluded that this combination of powerful and healthy effects suggests that taking omega-3 supplements could represent a rare, single nutritional intervention that has potential to provide extraordinary health benefits. Specifically, taking these supplements regularly may lower the risk for a host of diseases associated with aging, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and even mind-robbing Alzheimer's disease.

Many people think that calcium is the only nutrient necessary for strong bones. This is a dangerous myth that needs to be addressed.(1)

In fact, it takes 18 different nutrients to make durable bones. However, the most important bone mineral is magnesium because it activates alkaline phosphatase, the enzyme required to ensure optimal bone cell activity, as well as a strong bone matrix.(2)

It is vitally important to understand that calcium and magnesium are in an endless and dynamic dance within our cells.(3) These two key metabolic minerals are actually biological antagonists, and through their opposing actions, activate many of the vital functions we take for granted. But when these minerals get out of balance, due to stress-induced magnesium loss, a whole series of problems and chronic diseases unfold - most notably Heart Disease, our Number 1 killer.

Allopathic medicine is slowly recognizing the following facts about calcium and magnesium:(4)

a. There are dozens of conditions, such as heart disease, arthritis, IBD, IBS, asthma, Alzheimer's triggered by unchecked inflammation. Even cancer is now considered an inflammatory disease.(5)

b. All inflammation is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, otherwise known as the "fight or flight" response.(6)

c. The sympathetic nervous system is triggered by excess, unregulated calcium.(7) Calcium is pro-inflammatory.

d. Calcium is regulated and controlled by magnesium.(8) Magnesium is anti-inflammatory.

Let's say that again. Calcium is regulated and controlled by magnesium. You've probably never heard that before. Most doctors don't even know this foundational aspect of how our bodies actually work. I learned these critical mineral relationships in my 200 hours of biochemistry in medical school. But unfortunately our professors never translated that information into clinical application.

Here's how magnesium carries out its crucial role in calcium metabolism. All three hormones that control the level and location of calcium in our body (PTH, Calcitonin and Hormone-D (which is Vitamin D) are activated by magnesium. Which means, if you don't have enough magnesium, these hormones can't do a proper job.(9)

Medicine is also beginning to see a common basis of magnesium deficiency in heart disease.(10) When all the dust settles on research for high cholesterol, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), Post Ventricular Contractions (PVCs), any kind of ischemia, myocardial infarct and sudden cardiac death, what they All have in common is that magnesium deficiency is the precursor to All of these cardiac conditions.(11) EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

Think of it this way. The heart is NOT an "organ," but is actually a "muscle." In fact, it's the hardest working muscle in our body.

FACT: Every 24 hours our hearts beat 103,000+ times and pushes 20,000 pounds of blood around our body.

FACT: The highest concentration of magnesium in our body is in the heart ventricles, which are the muscles that "pump" all that blood.(12)

FACT: Muscles need lots of energy to create sustained movement, and expend more energy relaxing and filling up the ventricles - prior to the "pump!"(13)

FACT: Muscle energy in our body is solely in the form of Mg2-ATP (Magnesium-adenosine triphosphate).(14)

Our heart cells (and every cell in our body) must have magnesium present in plentiful amounts to create and metabolize the ATP necessary to run all of the cell's activities. Any cell unable to create proper levels of energy becomes diseased and dies, and this is especially true of heart muscles cells. The litany of heart diseases noted above is what follows.

So, how does our heart run out of energy?

"Stress!" Pure and simple.(15) "Stress," in all its many forms leads to magnesium use, and if not curtailed, magnesium loss. An accelerated MBR (Magnesium Burn Rate) leads to electrolyte dysfunction, which results in imbalances of our key minerals. The chronic loss of magnesium leads to a relentless increase of sodium and calcium which ultimately becomes the greatest form of cellular "Stress." And how do we know this? Hans Selye, MD, PhD, ScD, who is regarded as the Father of Stress, taught the world about the devastating impact of stress on our cellular metabolism, as well as steps we can take to manage it.

In 1958 Selye published a 235-page book called The Chemical Prevention of Cardiac Necrosis(16) in which he proved that when electrolyte imbalance becomes great enough, the cell no longer has the ability to produce ATP. We now know ATP is primarily dependent on magnesium. So, cell death - cardiac necrosis is the result of a systemic shortage of magnesium. Selye showed that heart muscle cell death is followed by inflammation in order to clean up the debris from dying cells followed by fibrosis/calcification as the whole area contracts and scars down in order to isolate, repair and minimize the damage.
